Noto come celebre personalità televisiva negli Stati Uniti, è un ex conduttore di talk show. Apparve alla televisione statunitense a livello nazionale per cinque decenni consecutivi, dagli anni sessanta ai duemila. Il suo programma più celebre fu il Dick Cavett Show sul network ABC, andato in onda dal 1969 al 1974.
