Fred Astaire, nome d'arte di Frederick Austerlitz , è stato un ballerino, attore, coreografo e cantante statunitense che seppe coniugare squisitamente ballo, musica e cinema e fu indiscusso maestro del tip-tap.

Insignito di un Premio Oscar onorario nel 1950, Astaire è stato attivo in teatro e al cinema per ben settantasei anni, durante i quali ha interpretato trentun film musicali. È soprattutto ricordato per aver lavorato in coppia con Ginger Rogers, con la quale ha girato dieci film.

George Balanchine e Rudolph Nureyev lo hanno considerato il più grande ballerino del XX secolo, e gli viene generalmente riconosciuto di essere stato il ballerino più influente nella storia dei musical sul grande e piccolo schermo.
