“Ma, soprattutto, piangevo perchè, all'improvviso, mi ero reso conto che ero proprio io quello in piedi, nel tunnel, con il vento che gli sferzava il viso. Non m'interessava vedere il centro della città. Non ci pensavo nemmeno. Perché ero in piedi, nel tunnel. Ed ero presente, davvero. E questo è bastato a farmi provare quella sensazione di infinito.”

“Quindi immagino che siano tanti i fattori che ci fanno essere come siamo. Molti, forse, non li conosceremo mai. Ma, anche se non possiamo essere noi a decidere da dove veniamo, possiamo scegliere la nostra meta. Ci sono altre cose che possiamo fare. Cercando di sentirci a posto.”

“Ti è mai successo? Ti è mai capitato di sentirti uno schifo, e poi ti passa, e non sai perché? Quando mi sento così bene, cerco di ricordarmi che ci saranno altre settimane tremende, prima o poi, e mi ripeto che dovrei immagazzinare quanti più dettagli possibili delle giornate grandiose, così, nei periodi bui, posso ripensare a essi e convincermi che sto di nuovo da Dio. Non funziona granché, ma penso che sia importante provare.”

“OK, questa è la mia vita. E desidero che tu sappia che sono felice e triste al tempo stesso, e che sto ancora cercando di capire come ciò sia possibile.”

“Di solto torno a casa a piedi da scuola, perché così ho la sensazione di essermela guadagnata. Mi spiego: voglio poter raccontare ai miei bambini che andavo a scuola come facevano i miei nonnni «ai loro tempi».”

“Mi sento come… infinito.”

“C'è qualcosa, in quel tunnel che porta in città. Di notte è stupendo. Semplicemente glorioso. Ti avvicini a un fianco della montagna, e fuori è buio, e la radio è a palla. Quando lo imbocchi, il vento viene risucchiato, e devi socchiudere gli occhi per le luci del soffitto. Quando inizi a farci l'abitudine, riesi a vedere l'uscita dalla parte opposta, in lontananza; e le note della radio si affievoliscono fino a svanire, perchè le onde non arrivano. Poi, quando sei al centro della galleria, la realtà intorno a te diventa un sogno tranquillo. L'uscita si avvicina, e tu hai l'impressione di non riuscire ad accelerare abbastanza. E alla fine, proprio quando inizi a pensare che non la raggiungerai mai, la vedi esattamente lì, di fronte a te. E la musica della radio torna, e hai l'impressione che sia addirittura più alta di prima. E il vento è lì, che aspetta. E tu voli fuori dal tunnel, dritto sul ponte. Ed eccola. La città. Un milione di luci e di edifici, ed è tutto così eccitante che ti sembra di vederlo per la prima volta. È davvero un'entrata grandiosa.”

“E per la prima volta nella vita, credo, mi sono sentito ok. Hai presente? Quella piacevole sensazione che provi quando ti guardi allo specchio, e i capelli ti stanno a posto per la prima volta da quando sei venuto al mondo. Io penso che non dovremmo dare troppa importanza al peso, ai muscoli e ai capelli in ordine… quando capita, però, ti senti bene. Proprio bene.”

“Non so se avrò tempo di scrivere altre lettere, perché forse sarò troppo impegnato a cercare a partecipare. Quindi, se questa dovesse essere l’ultima lettera, voglio che tu sappia che non stavo per niente bene prima di cominciare il liceo e tu mi hai aiutato. Anche se non sapevi di cosa parlavo o non conoscevi nessuno che aveva questi problemi, non mi hai fatto sentire solo.
Perché io so che ci sono persone che dicono che queste cose non esistono.
Perché ci sono persone che quando compiono diciassette anni, dimenticano com’era averne sedici. So che queste un giorno diventeranno delle storie e che le nostre immagini diventeranno vecchie fotografie e noi diventeremo il padre o la madre di qualcuno.
Ma qui, adesso, questi momenti non sono storie, questo sta succedendo.
Io sono qui e sto guardando lei. Ed è bellissima. Ora lo vedo, il momento in cui sai di non essere una storia triste. Sei vivo. E ti alzi in piedi e vedi le luci sui palazzi e tutto quello che ti fa restare a bocca aperta. E senti quella canzone, su quella strada, con le persone a cui vuoi più bene al mondo. E in questo momento, te lo giuro, NOI SIAMO INFINITO.”
