“Non più ministro! Il referendum del 5 luglio resterà nella storia come un momento unico per una piccola nazione che si è ribellata alla stretta del debito. Per questo motivo lascio oggi l'incarico di ministro delle Finanze. Considero un mio dovere quello di aiutare Alexis Tsipras, nel modo che ritiene più opportuno, per ottenere il massimo dal risultato che ci ha affidato ieri il popolo greco tramite il referendum. Mi farò carico con orgoglio del disprezzo dei creditori. Noi di sinistra sappiamo come agire insieme senza curarci dei privilegi che comportano i nostri incarichi. Per questo motivo sosterrò pienamente il primo ministro Tsipras, il nuovo ministro delle Finanze e il nostro governo. Lo sforzo sovrumano per onorare il coraggioso popolo della Grecia, e il "No" che ha consegnato al mondo, è appena iniziato.”
