È stato attivo per cinque anni durante gli anni sessanta; in seguito è divenuto consulente finanziario.
Durante i suoi anni da falsario, incassò 2,5 milioni di dollari in 26 paesi, usando più di otto diversi nomi inventati. Oggigiorno dirige la Abagnale and Associates, una compagnia di assistenza per frode finanziaria. Su di lui è stato girato da Steven Spielberg nel 2002 il film Prova a prendermi dove Abagnale è interpretato da Leonardo DiCaprio, oltre ad un musical di Broadway nel 2008.
