Fondatore della congregazione religiosa Tempio del popolo , è conosciuto per avere indotto 909 membri della sua congregazione, anche bambini e neonati, ad uno spaventoso massacro e suicidio di massa a Jonestown e per avere fatto uccidere cinque persone nella vicina pista aerea di atterraggio, tra cui un deputato del Congresso degli Stati Uniti d'America.
