La Longworth ha condotto una vita non convenzionale e controversa. Il suo matrimonio con il rappresentante Nicholas Longworth III, leader del partito repubblicano e 38° Speaker della Camera dei rappresentanti degli Stati Uniti, era traballante e la sua unica figlia, Paulina, era frutto dalla sua relazione con il senatore William Borah.
