Fu la prima donna ad essere ordinata come principale ministro protestante negli Stati Uniti. Era un'oratrice pubblica ben versata sulle questioni fondamentali della sua epoca e si distinse dai suoi contemporanei con il suo uso della fede religiosa nei suoi sforzi per promuovere i diritti delle donne.
