James Alfred Van Allen è stato un fisico statunitense.

Fu lo scopritore delle cinture radioattive che circondano la Terra e che dal suo nome sono chiamate fasce di Van Allen.

Egli ne dedusse l'esistenza sulla base dei dati trasmessi nel 1958 dall'Explorer I, il primo satellite artificiale americano.



Le fasce di Van Allen sono formate da particelle subatomiche elettricamente cariche che, provenendo dalle radiazioni solari e cosmiche, restano intrappolate nel campo magnetico terrestre o magnetosfera.

La scoperta di queste cinture radioattive fece temere che il loro attraversamento fosse molto pericoloso per gli astronauti: si pensò di far passare le astronavi sopra i Poli , oppure adottare pesanti schermature.

Ulteriori ricerche dimostrarono che tale pericolo era stato sopravvalutato; e infatti gli astronauti hanno sempre attraversato - pur con le dovute cautele - le cinture radioattive.

Van Allen fu responsabile scientifico di 24 sonde spaziali comprese le Pioneer 10 e Pioneer 11.
