Molto popolare negli anni novanta, dopo qualche anno di crisi nei primi anni 2000, è tornata al grande successo nel 2005 con il secondo album pubblicato per la sua terza casa discografica, con cui negli Stati Uniti, in occasione del brano Touch My Body, ha raggiunto il primato di 18 singoli al numero 1 in classifica, precedentemente detenuto da Elvis Presley, diventando l'artista solista con più numeri #1.

Con oltre 200 milioni di dischi venduti, è nel novero degli artisti di maggior successo nella storia della musica.

Tra i suoi album più di successo di sempre, si ricordano in particolare Mariah Carey, Music Box, Daydream, Butterfly, e The Emancipation of Mimi, che hanno venduto tra i 9 e i 40 milioni di copie, rientrando così tra gli album ad aver venduto di più in assoluto nella storia della musica. Ha registrato il record di più settimane di permanenza al primo posto nel mondo ; altro record è quello di aver passato il maggior numero di settimane al primo posto negli Stati Uniti con il singolo One Sweet Day.

Tra i suoi maggiori successi la cover di Without You , ma anche brani in cui figura come autrice e produttrice come Fantasy, One Sweet Day un duetto coi Boyz II Men, entrambi pubblicati nel 1995, My All e We Belong Together .

Il settimanale TIME l'ha eletta, nel 2014, la cantante più popolare di sempre.

Oltre ai suoi successi commerciali, Mariah ha ottenuto cinque Grammy Awards; 31 World Music Awards , e ben 89 nominations ai Billboard Music Awards, di cui 31 vinti. È inoltre l'unica donna ad aver ricevuto il The Artist of Millennium con cui, assieme a Michael Jackson è stata consacrata artista del millennio.
