Diventa famosa grazie al ruolo di Miley Stewart/Hannah Montana nella sitcom di Disney Channel Hannah Montana. Nell'ottobre del 2006 esce la prima colonna sonora di Hannah Montana, dove Miley canta nove canzoni, otto come Hannah Montana ed una come se stessa. Nel 2007 firma per la Hollywood Records un contratto per intraprendere la carriera solista e pubblica l'album Meet Miley Cyrus, insieme alla seconda colonna sonora Hannah Montana 2.

Nello stesso anno si esibisce nel Best of Both Worlds Tour, in cui canta sia come se stessa che come Hannah Montana. Il tour si trasforma poi in un film-concerto ed un album dal vivo, Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert usciti nel gennaio del 2008. Nel luglio 2008 pubblica il suo secondo album da solista, Breakout. Nello stesso anno gira il film Hannah Montana: The Movie, uscito nel 2009; durante la primavera e l'estate del 2009 escono altre due colonne sonore Hannah Montana: The Movie e Hannah Montana 3.

Inizia a crearsi un'immagine più adulta nel 2009/2010 con l'uscita dell'EP The Time of Our Lives uscito ad agosto del 2009, il film drammatico The Last Song e per l'album Can't Be Tamed usciti tutt'e due nel 2010. In quest'ultimo anno, gira l'ultima stagione di Hannah Montana, per l'occasione, il nome della serie viene cambiato in Hannah Montana Forever, ad ottobre 2010 esce l'ultima colonna sonora: Hannah Montana Forever.

Nell'estate del 2010 ha girato il film LOL - Pazza del mio migliore amico, distribuito nel 2012 e successivamente il film Una spia al liceo distribuito nel Regno Unito nel dicembre 2012. Cyrus cambia look nell'agosto dello stesso anno sfoggiando un nuovo taglio di capelli più corto e biondo. Nel 2013 la rivista statunitense Maxim l'ha posizionata al primo posto della propria Hot 100, una lista delle 100 donne più sexy al mondo. L'8 ottobre viene pubblicato l'album Bangerz, contenente 13 tracce ricche di collaborazioni con vari artisti. Fra esse, spicca la celebre hit Wrecking Ball, che diviene il più grande successo della cantante, tanto da regalarle la sua prima numero uno nella Billboard Hot 100.
