“Muhammad significa degno di lode, e Ali significa altissimo. Clay significa creta, polvere.”
Quando ho riflettuto su questo, ho capito tutto. Ci insegnano ad amare il bianco [white] ed odiare il nero [black]. Il colore nero significa essere tagliato fuori, ostracizzato. Il nero era male. Pensiamo a blackmail [ricatto].

The Soul of a Butterfly (2004)
“Once we realize we are all members of humanity, we will want to compete in the spirit of love.”
Origine: The Soul of a Butterfly (2004), p. xxiv
Contesto: Once we realize we are all members of humanity, we will want to compete in the spirit of love.
In a competition of love we would not be running against one another, but with one another. We would be trying to gain victory for all humanity. If I am a faster runner than you, you may feel bad seeing me pass you in the race, but if you know that we are both racing to make our world better, you will feel good knowing that we are racing toward a common goal, a mutual reward.
In a competition of love we'll all share in the victory, no matter who comes first.
A poem about his match with George Foreman, known as the Rumble in the Jungle (1974)
Contesto: Last night I had a dream, When I got to Africa,
I had one hell of a rumble.
I had to beat Tarzan’s behind first,
For claiming to be King of the Jungle.
For this fight, I’ve wrestled with alligators,
I’ve tussled with a whale.
I done handcuffed lightning
And throw thunder in jail.
You know I’m bad.
just last week, I murdered a rock,
Injured a stone, Hospitalized a brick.
I’m so mean, I make medicine sick.
I’m so fast, man,
I can run through a hurricane and don't get wet.
When George Foreman meets me,
He’ll pay his debt.
I can drown the drink of water, and kill a dead tree.
Wait till you see Muhammad Ali.
“The man who views the world at 50 the same as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life.”
Interview in Playboy magazine (November 1975)
“If they can make penicillin out of moldy bread, then they can sure make something out of you.”
Variante: Go to College,
Stay in school,
If they can make penicillin out of mouldy bread,
they can sure make something out of you.
“It's a lack of faith that makes people afraid of meeting challenges, and I believe in myself.”
As quoted in 101 Best Ways to Get Ahead (2004) edited by Michael E. Angier, with Sarah Pond, p. 59
“Age is whatever you think it is. You are as old as you think you are.”
As quoted in Jet magazine Vol. 58, No. 1 (August 1992)
Origine: The Soul of a Butterfly: Reflections on Life's Journey
To George Foreman before the start of the "Rumble in the Jungle" as the referee is giving them instructions (30 October 1974).
“If my mind can conceive it; and my heart can believe it — then I can achieve it.”
Similar to a quote by Jesse Jackson, which is in turn a modification of a quote by Napoleon Hill: "Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve."

Contesto: My soul has grown over the years, and some of my views have changed. As long as I am alive, I will continue to try to understand more because the work of the heart is never done. All through my life I have been tested. My will has been tested, my courage has been tested, my strength has been tested. Now my patience and endurance are being tested. Every step of the way I believe that God has been with me. And, more than ever, I know that he is with me now. I have learned to live my life one step, one breath, and one moment at a time, but it was a long road. I set out on a journey of love, seeking truth, peace and understanding. l am still learning.
“We all have the same God, we just serve him differently.”
Origine: The Soul of a Butterfly (2004), p. xvii
Contesto: We all have the same God, we just serve him differently. Rivers, lakes, ponds, streams, oceans all have different names, but they all contain water. So do religions have different names, and they all contain truth, expressed in different ways forms and times. It doesn't matter whether you're a Muslim, a Christian, or a Jew. When you believe in God, you should believe that all people are part of one family. If you love God, you can't love only some of his children.
