Robert James "Bobby" Fischer è stato uno scacchista statunitense naturalizzato islandese, Grande Maestro Internazionale e unico nativo del suo Paese ad aver vinto il titolo di campione del mondo.

Conquistò la corona degli scacchi il 1º settembre 1972, battendo il sovietico Boris Spasskij e la perse per essersi rifiutato di difenderla il 3 aprile 1975. Trascorse gli ultimi anni di vita da cittadino islandese dopo numerose controversie con il suo Paese d'origine e la perdita della cittadinanza statunitense.

Considerato tra i migliori giocatori di scacchi di tutti i tempi, nonostante la sua prolungata assenza dalle competizioni è rimasto uno dei nomi più conosciuti di questa disciplina, anche esternamente alla cerchia degli appassionati, a causa anche dei tratti eccentrici della sua personalità.

I suoi modi di fare stravaganti e la sua vita privata caratterizzata da solitudine, scarse abilità sociali e ossessione per lo studio degli scacchi portano molti psicologi a ritenere che Fischer fosse affetto dalla sindrome di Asperger.
