Allora sì che ne varrebbe la pena, allora sì che tutto troverebbe una giustificazione. Potremmo spostare i tavoli, portare dei divani, dei cuscini, degli asciugamani, degli animali di peluche… Ma tutto questo… tutto questo è osceno. Come possiamo starcene qui a parlare di nulla, invece di correre come un'unica fiumana di gente verso qualcosa, qualcosa di enorme, e ribaltarlo? Perché ci diamo la briga di venire qui in così gran numero, se poi non appicchiamo nemmeno un incendio e non facciamo a pezzi tutto quanto? Come osiamo starcene qui senza chiudere le porte, sostituire le lampadine a luce bianca con altre rosse, e dare inizio a un'orgia di massa in un gioioso mescolarsi di braccia gambe e seni? Che spreco.”

Certo. Io sono il serpente. E dunque, il serpente dovrebbe portare la pelle con sé, tenersela sempre sotto braccio? Dovrebbe farlo?

No, certo che no! Non ha braccia, un serpente! Come cazzo fa a portarsi in giro la pelle? Per favore. Ma proprio come il serpente, io non ho braccia – metaforicamente parlando, voglio dire – per portare con me tutto quanto. E poi non sono più cose mie. Nessuna è mia. Mio padre non è mio, non in quel senso, almeno. La sua morte e quello che ha fatto non è roba mia. Né lo sono il modo in cui sono stato educato, né la mia città, né le sue tragedie. Come potrebbero essere mie cose del genere?
Ritenermi responsabile di mantenere il segreto su queste cose mi parrebbe ridicolo. Sono nato in una città e in una famiglia, e questa città e questa famiglia mi sono capitate. Non le possiedo.
