“L'uomo moderno non riesce a comprendere… come la Risurrezione di Gesù possa essere un avvenimento che ha liberato una forza vitale che l'uomo, ora, può fare sua mediante i sacramenti. ciò appare assurdo al biologo, poiché per lui la morte non è un problema. L'idealista, certamente, parla d'una vita che sfugge alla morte, ma non può immaginarsi che questa vita sia data per il fatto che un morto ritorni alla vita fisica. L'azione di Dio che, in queste condizioni, ridarebbe la vita all'uomo, gli sembra incomprensibilmente inserita nel corso della natura. Non può riconoscere un'azione di Dio che lo tocca personalmente in questo avvenimento naturale tanto miracoloso quanto la risurrezione d'un morto che, d'altra parte, è incredibile.
Per il pensiero gnostico, Cristo morto e risorto non era solamente un uomo, era l'uomo-Dio; la morte e la sua risurrezione non erano un fatto limitato a lui in quanto individuo, ma erano l'avvenimento cosmico al quale abbiamo preso parte. Ma l'uomo moderno non può che difficilmente aderire a questo modo di pensare e, in ogni caso, non può riviverlo, poiché l'uomo vi è rappresentato come natura, l'avvenimento della salvezza come processo di natura. E da ultimo, la rappresentazione d'un Cristo preesistente come essere celeste e le rappresentazioni correlative della sua entrata in un mondo celeste e luminoso dove sarà rivestito in modo celeste e dotato d'un corpo pneumatico, non gli sembrano solamente incomprensibili a livello razionale, ma non hanno alcun significato per lui. Non comprende come la sua salvezza, che deve essere il compimento della sua vita, della sua personalità, possa confondersi con uno stato simile.”
