William Schwenck Gilbert è stato uno scrittore e librettista britannico, famoso per la sua collaborazione con il compositore Arthur Sullivan nella scrittura di opere comiche. Suo padre William Gilbert, fu un chirurgo della marina che poi divenne romanziere ed autore di brevi racconti.
