“La tendenza necessaria di tutte le scienze naturali è di andare dalla natura al principio intelligente. Questo e non altro vi è in fondo ad ogni tentativo diretto ad introdurre una teoria nei fenomeni naturali. La scienza della natura toccherebbe il massimo della perfezione se giungesse a spiritualizzare perfettamente tutte le leggi naturali in leggi dell'intuizione e del pensiero. I fenomeni (il materiale) debbono scomparire interamente, e rimanere soltanto le leggi (il formale). Accade perciò che quanto più nel campo della natura stessa balza fuori la legge, tanto più si dissipa il velo che l'avvolge, gli stessi fenomeni si rendono più spirituali ed infine spariscono del tutto. I fenomeni ottici non sono altro che una geometria, le cui linee sono tracciate per mezzo della luce, e questa luce stessa è già di dubbia materialità. Nei fenomeni del magnetismo scompare ogni traccia materiale, e dei fenomeni di gravitazione non rimane altro che la loro legge, la cui estrinsecazione in grande è il meccanismo dei movimenti celesti. Una teoria perfetta della natura sarebbe quella per cui la natura tutta si risolvesse in un'intelligenza.”
