“Ho buone ragioni per credere, senza voler giurare, che non ci sono attualmente altri esemplari al mondo di questo libro [lo Spaccio de la bestia trionfante], eccetto il mio. I membri della Società lo tennero così segreto che nessun bibliotecario né alcun autore inglese ne ha mai fatto la benché minima menzione; era del tutto sconosciuto agli eruditi prima del 1696 quando lo trovai e lo feci vedere a diverse persone, sebbene senza mai farne fare una copia. Questo trattato è sia pericoloso che empio ed è possibile che lo leggano solo coloro che hanno buon senso e forza di ragione per poter tenere testa a tutti i sofismi. Prima che io l'avessi mostrato a Bayle, Schopp era il solo che ne avesse riferito il titolo, nella sua lettera a Rittershausen; ma è certo che non aveva mai visto il libro, perché ha creduto che la Bestia Trionfante fosse il Papa e che Bruno avesse intenzione di lusingare i protestanti; invece per Bestia egli intende ogni religione rivelata in generale, di qualunque tipo sia, e in qualunque modo avvenga che essa trionfi nel Mondo. Sia la religione pagana, sia la giudaica o la cristiana, egli prende di mira, le mette in ridicolo, le rigetta allo stesso modo senza cerimonie e senza eccezioni.”

“Le innumerevoli generazioni successive che hanno abitato su questa terra sono ritornate con la loro morte alla massa comune, sparpagliandosi e mescolandosi con le altre parti e a queste poi si uniscono gli incessanti flussi di materia – simili a quelli di un fiume – che la traspirazione fa continuamente sgorgare dai corpi degli uomini mentre vivono, ed inoltre ancora il loro nutrimento quotidiano, l'inspirazione dell'aria e le altre aggiunte continue di materia al loro volume. Insomma considerando tutte queste cose sembra probabile che non ci sia sulla superficie della terra nessuna particella della materia che non abbia fatto parte dell'uomo. Questo ragionamento poi non è limitato alla nostra specie, ma vale anche per qualsiasi altro ordine di animali e piante, o per ogni altro essere; infatti tutti sono stati trasformati gli uni negli altri mediante innumerevoli e continue rivoluzioni, così che non c'è nulla di più certo del fatto che ogni cosa materiale è tutte le cose, e che tutte le cose si riducono a una sola.”
