Nel milleottocento un esploratore francese riscoprì, sepolta nella giungla, la città di Angkor, che fu successivamente riportata alla luce da alcuni archeologi francesi.
Gli abitanti, discendenti dai Khmers, avevano due teorie sull'origine della città: una, che fosse stata costruita dai giganti e l'altra, che la città fosse sorta dal nulla, al tempo della creazione del mondo.
Sull'argomento, Maurice Wiggin, nell'edizione del Sunday Times del primo ottobre millenovecentosessantacinque, scriveva: "Riuscirono i cittadini di Angkor a realizzare il futuro progettato?
