Timothy Thomas Powers è uno scrittore statunitense di romanzi di fantascienza e fantasy.

La maggior parte delle storie di Powers si basa su avvenimenti o personaggi storici in cui l'autore inserisce elementi occulti o soprannaturali.

Powers è cresciuto in California da una famiglia cattolica. Ha studiato letteratura inglese alla California State University di Fullerton dove per la prima volta incontrò James Blaylock and K. W. Jeter. I tre sono rimasti buoni amici anche dopo il college e hanno talvolta lavorato insieme. Durante tale periodo Powers conobbe e diventò amico del grande scrittore Philip K. Dick tanto che il personaggio di "David" nel romanzo di Dick Valis si basa appunto su Powers.

La prima opera di Powers a riscuotere un certo successo fu Il Re Pescatore nel 1979 ma l'opera che lo fece conoscere al grande pubblico fu Le porte di Anubis , vincitore del premio Philip K. Dick e tradotto in numerose lingue.

“Ho desiderato diventare uno scrittore dalla prima volta che ho letto un libro. Ricordo che era un libro per bambini, Timothy la Tartaruga, e mi sono detto che scrivere era la cosa più bella che una persona potesse fare! Poi, a quindici anni, la rivista Fantasy & SF pubblicò un editoriale nel quale si spiegava come fare per proporre un racconto. Ne scrissi subito uno e lo inviai… Ovviamente fu respinto. “Penso che sia cruciale evocare immagini. Nella fantascienza e nella fantasy… o in qualsiasi altro tipo di fiction, il lettore deve essere indotto a credere che quegli eventi immaginari stiano realmente accadendo a quei personaggi immaginari; quindi lo scrittore deve fare in modo che l'intera cosa appaia il più possibile reale. Ciò significa far sì che il lettore ne conosca l'aspetto, i suoni, i profumi! Lo scrittore deve raffigurare tutto questo in maniera assolutamente precisa… direi, quasi, che debba sperimentarlo! Che si creda o meno alla magia, il nostro cervello è ancora troppo statico per riuscire a disquisire di spettri o di cose bizzarre. Quindi, personalmente, nei miei libri cerco di trattare la magia in modo che sembri 'realistica'. Cerco di basarmi su miti che la gente, più o meno, un tempo conosceva, e cerco di fare in modo che i miei personaggi si comportino come farebbero le persone reali se essa esistesse davvero. Nel contempo cerco di evitare di trasformarla in qualcosa di ultra-tecnologico… proprio per mantenere intatto quel brivido che voglio che il lettore sperimenti, è piuttosto una sorta di trasgressione all'ordine naturale delle cose.”
