Ha scritto dieci libri ed ha ricevuto la Presidential Medal of Freedom nel febbraio 1983 dall'allora presidente degli Stati Uniti d'America Ronald Reagan. Il suo primo libro, Il vero credente, pubblicato nel 1951, fu largamente riconosciuto come un classico, ricevendo critiche positive sia dagli esperti che dai profani.
