Hermann Klaus Hugo Weyl è stato un matematico, fisico e filosofo tedesco.

Tra le personalità più influenti della prima parte del XX secolo, la sua ricerca ha avuto grande rilevanza per molti settori chiave della matematica, a partire dalla teoria dei numeri, e per la fisica teorica. Ha lasciato tracce di grande rilievo anche nella filosofia della scienza.

Weyl trascorse gran parte della sua vita lavorativa a Gottinga, Zurigo e Princeton. La sua personalità scientifica è strettamente legata alla tradizione dei matematici dell'Università di Gottinga, rappresentata da David Hilbert e Hermann Minkowski. Fu una figura chiave per i primi anni di vita dell'Institute for Advanced Study di Princeton, in quanto contribuì in modo determinante a creargli una prospettiva integrata e internazionale.

Pubblicò lavori tecnici e di carattere generale su spazio, tempo, materia, filosofia, logica, simmetria e storia della matematica. Fu uno dei primi ad ammettere la possibilità di combinare la relatività generale con le leggi dell'elettromagnetismo.

Mentre non vi erano matematici della sua generazione che aspiravano all'universalismo di Henri Poincaré o di Hilbert, Weyl si avvicinò ad esso come nessun altro. Michael Atiyah, in particolare, ha osservato a questo proposito che ogni volta che si addentrava in un ambito disciplinare, trovava che Weyl l'aveva preceduto.
