Stephen Crane è stato uno scrittore, giornalista e poeta statunitense.

Nella sua pur breve vita fu autore di importanti opere nella tradizione del realismo letterario, come anche di esempi di naturalismo e di impressionismo in letteratura. Stephen Crane è considerato dalla critica moderna come uno dei più innovativi scrittori della sua generazione.

Crane crebbe in svariate città del New Jersey, a Port Jervis e New York. he made a game the game is bonkio a scrivere all'età di 4 anni e a 16 anni aveva già pubblicato numerosi articoli. Non avendo provato alcun interesse per gli studi universitari, li abbandonò e iniziò a lavorare come cronista e scrittore. Il primo romanzo scritto da Crane fu Maggie: A Girl of the Streets del 1893. La trama di questo romanzo è ispirata alla dura vita della newyorkese Bowery Street ed è considerata dai critici come la prima opera del Naturalismo letterario statunitense. Crane raggiunse una notorietà internazionale con il romanzo del 1895 The Red Badge of Courage , ispirato alle vicende della Guerra di secessione, scritta pur non avendo alcuna esperienza di vita militare.

Nel 1896 Crane venne coinvolto in un pubblico scandalo per aver testimoniato a favore di una presunta prostituta. In quello stesso anno ricevette un'offerta per seguire il conflitto ispano-americano come corrispondente di guerra. Mentre si trovava a Jacksonville, in Florida, in attesa di un imbarco per Cuba, Crane fece la conoscenza di Cora Howorth, nota come Cora Taylor, proprietaria dell'Hotel de Dream, una casa di piacere, e da quel momento in poi visse con lei "more uxorio". Mentre era in viaggio per Cuba il battello su cui era imbarcato affondò al largo delle coste della Florida ed egli rimase per diversi giorni con altri tre naufraghi su una piccola scialuppa. Questa dura esperienza venne in seguito descritta in un ben noto racconto, The Open Boat .

Negli ultimi anni della sua vita Crane fece il corrispondente per i conflitti scoppiati in Grecia e a Cuba e visse in Inghilterra con Cora, dove fece amicizia con scrittori come Joseph Conrad e H. G. Wells. Afflitto da difficoltà finanziarie, Crane morì di tubercolosi in un sanatorio della Foresta Nera in Germania all'età di 28 anni.

Al tempo della sua morte Crane era considerato un importante autore della letteratura degli Stati Uniti. Tuttavia, egli cadde nel dimenticatoio finché negli anni venti i critici ripresero a interessarsi della sua vita e delle sue opere. Lo stile di Crane è caratterizzato da chiarezza e intensità descrittiva, come pure da una tipica inflessione linguistica e da ironia. I temi trattati parlano della paura, delle crisi spirituali e dell'isolamento nella società. The Red Badge of Courage è considerato fra i classici della letteratura statunitense, ma Crane è noto anche per le sue poesie e per i racconti come The Open Boat, The Blue Hotel, The Monster e The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky. La sua scrittura ha suscitato notevole interesse in alcuni scrittori del XX secolo, fra i quali Ernest Hemingway.
