Helmut Heinrich Waldemar Schmidt è stato un politico e funzionario tedesco.

È stato Cancelliere della Repubblica Federale Tedesca dal 6 maggio 1974 al 1º ottobre 1982 . Dopo aver partecipato al conflitto mondiale, divenuto membro del Partito Socialdemocratico di Germania nel 1946, fu parlamentare del Bundestag nel 1953-1962.

Mantenne il ruolo di Ministro della difesa della RFT dal 1969 al 1972, diventando nel 1972 Ministro delle finanze .

Nel 1974 subentrò a Willy Brandt alla guida del governo, dopo che questo si era dimesso per la scoperta del coinvolgimento di un suo consigliere, Günter Guillaume, in una rete di spionaggio a favore della DDR. Schmidt resse il paese per otto anni, durante un periodo segnato dal terrorismo , dalla guerra fredda che coinvolgeva la RFD e la vicina DDR, dal rafforzamento dell'integrazione europea e dalla crisi energetica che provocò forti fiammate inflazionistiche in tutto l'Occidente industrializzato, segnato anche dalla recessione o stagflazione. Venne sostituito nel 1982 da Helmut Kohl per mezzo di una mozione di sfiducia costruttiva, presentata dai suoi ex-alleati della FDP insieme alla CDU/CSU. I quattro ministri della FDP avevano lasciato pochi giorni prima la coalizione social-liberale formata da SPD e FDP in seguito a disaccordi in tema di politica economica e politica estera. La mozione di sfiducia costruttiva contro Schmidt fu la seconda utilizzata nella storia della Repubblica Federale Tedesca. Per la prima volta la mozione di sfiducia costruttiva era stata utilizzata nel 1972 da Rainer Barzel, leader della CDU, contro il cancelliere Willy Brandt. Questa mozione non ebbe successo, venendo a mancare a Barzel 2 voti sui 249 che sarebbero stati necessari per sostituire Brandt.

Dal 1953 al 19 gennaio 1962 e dal 1965 al 1987 è stato membro del Bundestag tedesco e dal 27 febbraio 1958 al 29 novembre 1961 è stato anche membro del Parlamento europeo.

Si ritirò dal Parlamento nel 1986, dopo essersi scontrato con l'ala sinistra della SPD, che gli si oppose in difesa e delle questioni economiche. Nel 1986 è stato uno dei principali promotori dell'unione monetaria europea e di una Banca centrale europea. Wikipedia
