Signora: Mi sembra che mi diano una specie di serenità.
Manders: Curioso. In che modo?
Signora: Ci trovo come la spiegazione e la conferma di molte cose alle quali ho già riflettuto per conto mio. Questa appunto è la cosa strana, signor pastore… in quei libri, in fondo, non c'è nulla di nuovo; nulla più di quel che il mondo pensa e crede in generale. Ma il fatto è che il mondo non se ne rende conto e non vuole confessarselo.
Manders: Oh, per l'amor di Dio! Crede sul serio che il mondo…
Signora: Certo che lo credo.
Manders: Sì, ma non in questo paese? Non qui da noi?
Signora: Ma sì, anche qui da noi.
Manders: Bene, le garantisco che…!
Signora: D'altronde che cosa ha da obiettare contro questi libri?
Manders: Obiettare? Non vorrà già credere ch'io mi sia mai dato all'esame di opere di quel genere?
Signora: In altri termini, lei non conosce affatto ciò che condanna?
Manders: Ho letto abbastanza di quel che si scrive intorno a questi libri per disapprovarli.
Signora: Sì, ma la sua opinione personale…
Manders: Cara signora Alving, nella vita vi sono casi in cui bisogna fidarsi dell'opinione altrui. Così è in questo mondo; ed è bene che sia così. Altrimenti che ne sarebbe della società umana?”
