“Archimede ha fatto una quantità di scoperte straordinarie ed eccezionalmente geniali. Fra esse voglio parlare soprattutto di una che porta i segni di una grande intelligenza. Quando Gerone regnava in Siracusa, per le sue fortunate imprese volle offrire ad un certo santuario una corona d'oro che aveva ammirato. Decise il prezzo dell'opera con un artista e gli consegnò la quantità di oro necessaria. A suo tempo la corona finita fu consegnata, con piena soddisfazione del re, ed anche il peso della corona risultò coincidere con quello dell'oro. Più tardi, però, Cerone ebbe motivo di sospettare che l'artista avesse sottratto una parte dell'oro e l'avesse sostituita con un ugual peso di argento. Indignato per l'inganno, ma non riuscendo a trovare il modo di dimostrarlo, pregò Archimede di studiare la questione. Un giorno che, tutto preso da questo pensiero, Archimede era entrato in un bagno, si accorse che mano a mano che il suo corpo si immergeva, l'acqua traboccava. Questa osservazione gli diede la soluzione del problema. Si slanciò fuori dal bagno e tutto emozionato si precipitò nudo verso casa, gridando con tutte le forze che aveva trovato quel che cercava: "Eureka! Eureka!"”
