Augustus Montague Toplady è stato un predicatore e poeta inglese.
Augustus Montague Toplady, conosciuto come "il Toplady" è stato un ecclesiastico anglicano e compositore di inni sacri. È ricordato oggi soprattutto per essere l'autore del canto “Rock of Ages” o, in versione italiana, “Rocca eterna dell'amor” in uso presso le chiese evangeliche. Contesto: Christ whose glory fills the skies,
Christ, the true, the only light,
Sun of Righteousness, arise,
Triumph o'er the shades of night;
Day-spring from on high, be near,
Day-star in my heart appear.
“Be of Sin the double Cure,
Cleanse me from its Guilt and Pow'r.”
The last lines of this stanza are often changed to "Be of sin the double cure, Save from wrath, and make me pure.".
