“Ogni ricerca consiste, dunque, in una proporzione comparante, che è facile o difficile. Ma l'infinito, in quanto infinito, poiché si sottrae ad ogni proporzione, ci è sconosciuto. […] Il numero include in sé tutto ciò che può essere proporzionato. Il numero, che costituisce la proporzione, non c'è soltanto nell'ambito della quantità, ma c'è anche in tutte le altre cose che, in qualsiasi modo, possono convenire o differire tra loro. […] Per questo, forse, Pitagora pensava che tutto esiste, ha consistenza ed è intelligibile in virtù dei numeri. […] La precisione, però, nelle combinazioni fra le cose corporee ed una proporzione perfetta fra il fra il noto e l'ignoto è superiore alle capacità della ragione umana, per cui sembrava a Socrate di non conoscere null'altro che la propria ignoranza. […] allora vuol dire che noi desideriamo sapere di non sapere, dato che il desiderio di sapere, che è in noi, non dev'essere vano. E se potremo conseguirlo appieno, avremo raggiunto una dotta ignoranza. La cosa più perfetta che un uomo quanto mai interessato al sapere potrà conseguire nella sua dottrina è la consapevolezza piena di quell'ignoranza che gli è propria. E tanto più egli sarà dotto, quanto più si saprà ignorante […].”
