E si allargava, si allargava prima, durante e dopo la vita, fino a coinvolgere i bianchi stessi che l'avevano creata. Li rendeva crudeli, stupidi, più di quanto non volessero esserlo, tanto erano spaventati da quella giungla di loro creazione. I babbuíni urlanti vivevano sotto la loro pelle bianca, le gengive rosse erano le loro.”

E lo sapeva. Qualunque cosa capita fuori dalla porta di casa mia non mi ríguar(la. Il mondo è in questa stanza. Qui c'è tutto quello che esiste e tutto quello di cui c'è bisogno.”

“Rimasta sola sotto il portico, Amata sorride. Ma ora la sua mano è vuota. Sethe sta correndo via da lei, sta correndo via e lei sente il vuoto nella mano che prima lei stringeva: sta correndo per raggiungere le facce di quella gente laggiù, si sta unendo a loro e sta lasciandosi dietro Amata. Sola. Di nuovo. Poi vede Denver, anche lei sta correndo. Via da lei, verso quel mucchio di gente laggiù. Formano una collina. Una collina di negri: cadono. E sopra tutti loro, sollevandosi dal suo posto, con una frusta in mano, c'è l'uomo senza pelle che guarda. Guarda lei.”

Amata lascia ricadere la mano. «Io sono così.»”

Cosa ancora più importante — assai più importante — là fuori c'erano i bianchi. Da cosa si capivano? Sethe diceva dalla bocca e, a volte, dalle mani. La Nonna Baby diceva che non c'era riparo — sapevano stare in agguato quanto pareva loro, sapevano cambiare idea continuamente e, anche quando pensavano di comportarsi bene, erano sempre lontani mille miglia da quello che facevano i veri esseri umani.”

“Le nere istruite non erano una minaccia per nessuno e così io mi sono trovata in una posizione privilegiata, mentre le mie compagne italiane ed ebree dovevano lottare per non finire chiuse in convento o in un matrimonio combinato.”

And when she got around to worrying about what would be the case if Sethe died or Paul D took her away, a dream-come-true comes true just to leave her on a pile of newspaper in the dark.”
