George Eliot, pseudonimo di Mary Anne Evans , è stata una scrittrice britannica, una delle più importanti dell'epoca vittoriana. I suoi romanzi sono ambientati prevalentemente in Inghilterra e sono famosi per lo stile realista e l'approfondimento psicologico dei personaggi. La Evans usa uno pseudonimo a partire dalla sua prima opera narrativa "Scenes of Clerical Life"; a differenza di altre scrittrici a lei contemporanee o precedenti , la Evans utilizza uno pseudonimo non tanto per ragioni sociali, quanto per vezzo. Sebbene infatti all'epoca le donne scrittrici non fossero ben viste, la Evans proveniva da un rango sociale elevato, era la compagna dell'editore e intellettuale George Henry Lewes e la sua formazione ed esperienza erano già ben note al pubblico. Era inoltre tanto apprezzata da non aver alcun bisogno di nascondersi dietro a un falso nome.
