Samuel Barclay Beckett è stato uno scrittore, drammaturgo, poeta, traduttore e sceneggiatore irlandese.

Considerato uno degli scrittori più influenti del XX secolo, Beckett è senza dubbio la più significativa personalità di quel genere teatrale e filosofico che Martin Esslin definì come "Teatro dell'assurdo". Autore sia in lingua inglese sia in lingua francese, le sue opere più famose sono la pièce Aspettando Godot e il cortometraggio cinematografico Film del 1965, con Buster Keaton. Autore di romanzi e di poesie, nel 1969 Beckett venne insignito del Premio Nobel per la letteratura «per la sua scrittura, che - nelle nuove forme per il romanzo ed il dramma - nell'abbandono dell'uomo moderno acquista la sua altezza».
